Working at height involves considerable risk and is the most common cause of accidents that endanger the health and life of workers. It is therefore particularly important to take appropriate precautions. So what should safe working at a manlift look like? Let’s check it!
WORK ON HEIGHTS – BASIC OSH REGULATIONS
Work on heights requires strict observance of OSH regulations. According to OSH regulations, this work is performed on a surface located at least 1.0 m above ground or floor level. The rules of OSH at work at height assume that the area where employees are located is fenced with a railing consisting of protective railings at a height of at least 1.1 m and curbs that are at least 0.15 m high. The OSH regulations also state that the work is to be organised and performed in such a way that it is not necessary for an employee to lean out of the way of the railing or the outline of the device on which it is located.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR SAFETY WHEN WORKING ON A MANLIFT
The manlifts, in accordance with the OSH regulations, are equipped with barriers with a height of 1.1 m, which makes them highly safe devices. Safe work on the manlift requires that employees are properly trained and equipped with personal protective equipment.
What should be kept in mind?
The basic principles of occupational safety and health at work at heights assume that in the case of work carried out more than 2 m above floor or terrain level, employees should be equipped with equipment to prevent falls from a height.
Equipment for working at height is mainly: safety helmets, boots and high-visibility vests and safety harnesses.
Photo The safeguard equipment for working at heights must be of a high standard, good quality and in perfect technical condition, because only then does it fulfil its purpose.
Helmet for works on heights
A helmet for working on heights consists of an external part – the shell, which absorbs the impact energy. The shell may have vents, a canopy and accessory holders. Another element is the rafter framing, the inner part attached to the shell. It is in direct contact with the head and must be firmly fixed on it, which is possible thanks to the main belt covering the head at the height of the skull base and forehead. There is a sweatshirt in the forehead area and, thanks to the chin strap, the helmet does not fall off the head.
Safe working on a manlift requires suitable protective footwear. The safety shoes must have bottoms made of plastic that prevent slipping and falling even when the metal floor in the lift basket is wet.
Safety shoes can be made of leather or rubber and have metal reinforced noses to protect the feet from impact or crushing. Since the manlifts are often used for electrical works, insulating shoes may be a good choice, which (in combination with covers and gloves) protect against electric shock.
High-vis (warning) vests are part of the protective clothing that should be provided for those working on a manlift. The vests are suitable for both outdoor works (e.g. in places of heavy traffic) and indoor works (e.g. high-bay warehouses). They significantly increase the visibility of employees, and thus their safety.
The purpose of a harness for work on heights is to support the worker and prevent him/her from falling or, when it occurs, to keep the worker close to a vertical position, protecting him/her from falling from a height and hitting the ground. The safety harness is equipped with hook-and-loop buckles that allow it to be connected to a certified anchor point in the manlift basket.
Safety harnesses can be equipped with a safety line attached to fixed structures or a hip belt (equipped with buckles), which is used when working in a support, on masts or poles.
SAFETY ON MANLIFT
Safe working on a manlift depends, among other things, on the type of equipment and the adjustment of security features to it. For construction, renovation, electrical or cleaning work, a basket manlift is ideal. Here you can choose between articulated, telescopic or scissor lifts.
In order to be safe to work on a manlift, the lift operator must have the appropriate powers. The lifting capacity of the machine must not be exceeded, and during operation, account must be taken, among other things, of the wind force above which work becomes dangerous.
The manlifts are equipped with limiters, which increase the safety of the machine. Among them there are speed limiters for working movements as well as a load limiter. This is part of the measuring system, which is designed to prevent the machine from being overloaded, which in turn causes it to lose its stability.
The tilt sensor also plays an important role – thanks to the electronic spirit level, when the tilt is too great, the device signals this fact to the operator by flashing the light mornlift.com.
Manlift’s safety valves
The lifts are also equipped with safety valves to protect the manlift, including a safety valve (protects the hydraulic system against overload) and a controllable check valve (hydraulic lock) to prevent the device from falling down in case of hose breakage and oil leakage from the cylinder.
The mobile platforms are equipped with a safety frame which prevents an employee from falling out of the basket of a manlift. It is located along the entire perimeter of the platform and serves, among other things, to temporarily stop the climb if a part of the platform encounters an obstacle.
Regular technical maintenance – manlifts service
Regular technical inspections of the machine, carried out by certified companies such as MORNLIFT, are a guarantee of safe work on a manlift. Authorized service usually also allows for renting various types of manlifts.
When it comes to the price of the manlift, the rental price depends on a number of factors, including the type of equipment, the time for which the lift is to be rented or whether you choose the service with or without an operator. The rental of a manlift can be short or long term and the price depends on the type of manlift.
